Quarry Hill Protected with
Conservation Easement
On November 19th,
representatives from the town and MVLT signed into effect the Quarry
Hill Conservation Easement, permanently protecting the 320-acre
town-owned property. Located off of Depot Street, the Quarry Hill
Farm is home to scenic forests, cultivated fields, and wild
blueberries. The easement will ensure that Quarry Hill remains
undeveloped in perpetuity, preserving the land’s rural character
while allowing for low-impact recreation, forestry and agricultural
activities.
Two years in the making, the
Quarry Hill project first began with a petition calling for the land
to remain a place where residents could hunt, hike, snowmobile and
ski. In June 2005, the Town of Waldoboro voted to protect the
property as “undeveloped open space for the use and enjoyment of the
residents of Waldoboro.” The Quarry Hill Easement Committee then
worked with MVLT to draft a conservation plan for the property. This
plan was approved in November of 2006 when the townspeople of
Waldoboro voted to protect the Quarry Hill property with a
conservation easement, again demonstrating the tremendous amount of
public support for this project. Throughout the p ast
year, MVLT worked closely with the town to draft and finalize the
easement. The project’s long history highlights the success of
collaboration between MVLT, the Town of Waldoboro, and the many
dedicated citizens who worked to ensure that Quarry Hill remains an
important natural area to be enjoyed by all.
Creating new
partnerships and community support to achieve our shared
conservation goals is critical, and the Quarry Hill project is a
wonderful example of the larger community that MVLT is a part of.
MVLT hopes to continue working to better know our watershed
communities and to identify shared conservation goals that we can
work towards together.
