During the day you will see the town of Rockland, the harbor, the
breakwater and lighthouse, and on the opposite side of the harbor is the
town of Owls Head. On days with good visibility, in the distance you might
see Vinalhaven's islands in the left half of the horizon. At night, you
will only see the lights of Rockland.
Benner Hill looks down over Rockland to the East. Thomaston is to the South, and Warren is to the West. The map link on the right shows where our camera is aimed.
The camera is a Sony HI-8 camcorder in a sealed weatherproof cylinder well secured on our communications tower on Benner Hill. The camera is attached with an S-video cable to an Axis camera server, which is a network-attached webcam. This plugs into our ethernet hub and UPS at the base of our tower.
Midcoast Internet Solutions maintains six communications towers and uses several others in the Midcoast area for our high speed / no phone lines Wireless Internet Service. (Click on the link for more information and coverage areas.) These towers distribute internet access via our highly reliable and wickedly fast 2.4ghz FHSS 1-3mbps wireless network. MIS uses this network to reduce phone company expenses and to hook customers up to the internet with 24x7 connections.
