Mills on Crawford River in South Union pictured circa 1875 - Over the years, businesses included a fulling mill; a carding mill; a paper mill; potash manufacturing; Brown Brothers organs, furniture and later clothing; Vaughn & Pardoe edge tools; Jones Foundry; Long Lumber Mill; Thurston Brothers furniture and caskets. No mills remain in this area.
The Wingate & Simmons Carriage Shop circa 1875 - Located on the north east corner of the Union Common. First built by Frank Rice in 1844, then became Collins, Wingate & Little and finally Wingate & Simmons. The well known "One Horse Shays" was produced here. One is owned by the Smithsonian Museum. Another is on display at the Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage located at the Union Fairgrounds in Union, Maine.
The Rural House, pictured circa 1875 - A stage stop on the Union Common, originally called the Gilmore (Gillmor) Hotel. then the Cobb Hotel. This building is located on the north side of the Common, now a private residence.
Horse & Buggy traveling west on Common Road towards Union Common circa 1875 - In the distance the Universalist Church can be seen. The Church was dismantled and later burned. The Old Town House is visible on the far upper right.
