Hazel Mitchell, (originally from Yorkshire, England), now lives and works from her studio in central Maine. Not quite born with a pencil in her grasp, it wasn't long before she figured out she loved to draw. She attended Art college at York and Sunderland in England, served in the Royal Navy as a graphic artist (really) and was CEO of a print and design business for many years before finally making it across the pond.

She has introduced young and old to the fun of drawing, from beginners to those of a more practised talent. Her work has been displayed in several exhibitions and work is in several collections. She has had the honour of her art being received by the Princess Royal and the late Queen Mother.

Most days she can be found in her studio  illustrating children's books, as well as producing fine and commercial art. She has fine art critics in her five dogs, and the studio art director (Sleep, the coon cat) keeps an eye on production.

What to Bring:
Pencils - bring a variety of softer B drawing pencils (include 2B)
Good quality eraser like a Mars Staedtler
Masking tape (to hold down your paper!)
Black drawing pen/pens such as Micron or Uniball (your choice of width)
Stick Charcoal.

Good quality drawing pad for pencil/ink work. (11" x 14" or similar, and a smaller sketch 'note' pad if you wish)

Your choice of a coloured medium - this could be:
Coloured pencils/watercolour pencils/pastel pencils.
Watercolour (suggest block paint rather than tubes).
Oil crayons.
Acrylic paint.

Please bring appropriate brushes and surface to paint on for your colour medium choice. Paper/boards that are produced in a tear off block pad will work best.

When choosing a coloured medium to bring with you, please take in to account that we will be on a moving vessel and that drying time/space may be an issue. Regular pastels and tube paints are not recommended. Please do not bring oil paint. Acrylics are a possibility.

Bring a good size plastic bag to put your supplies in and protect your artwork (especially when going ashore!). Bag to carry your supplies in. Please note storage space is limited in cabins.

Sturdy knee boards for drawing will be provided as will fixative for charcoal and pastel.

A small folding field easel for painting ashore is optional.

Bring a camera if you want to take shots of your subjects for later study.

If you have any further questions, please email: hazel-mitchell@hotmail.com and she will be happy to help.

As you know, each of the vessels in the fleet has its own style, and as you'd expect, each captain has his or her own distinctive writer's "voice," so although the chapters are structured similarly, the writing styles vary, creating a unique collection of stories and recipes that are as individual as each windjammer. Many of the recipes are typical of down-home, Down East, schooner-style comfort food, and several are upscale gourmet delights.
