NOTE: Now matter what your have for surge protection, grounding, etc., you cannot protect your equipment from a direct lighting strike.

Every year, beginning in the spring and throughout summer, our Tech Support Department is flooded with calls regarding modem problems due to lightning strikes. Most computers are protected from these electrical surges coming into the computer via the power cord by using a surge protector. Most surge protectors do not protect the phone line running into your computer. We recommend that you have the phone line protected as well as your computers power cord(s). When correctly installed this device will help prevent unwanted current from reaching your modem. If the current is too great it will ultimately sacrifice itself to protect your equipment from damage.

These devices can be found for under $30.00 at most stores that carry computer supplies.
You can buy other brands that may be cheaper, but there is a greater chance of modem/phone line problems due to the quality of the hardware.

Telephone Surge Protection
You connect your phone line from the wall jack to the surge protector. You connect the other phone line from the surge protector to the modem.
We recommend the
following surge protectors:

APC

Tripplite
Panamax
