April 1998
- April 30, 1998 8:00pm. A problem with one of the lines in
Washington (845) was corrected. All lines are working properly now. More
lines will be added as soon as additional bandwidth is hooked up.
- April 27, 1998 5:00pm, It has come to our attention that 110
people have mail files on the server larger than 1 Meg in size, and 20
people have mail files larger than 5 Meg in size. We just killed a mail
transfer of a mailbox 56 Meg in size, as it was slowing the server. This
is a lot of mail and will take a long time to transfer if you fit into any
of these categories. If you use the "leave mail on server" option in your
email, please uncheck it once in a while to transfer mail off the server
so that mail does not pile up too high. Some email programs become
unreliable (especially if you have an unreliable modem) when mail file
size exceeds 1 Meg, and darn near useless when things get to about 5 meg.
By keeping mail less than 1 Meg the majority of the time, things will be
much faster and more reliable for you. Thanks.
- April 27, 1998 4:13pm, The Nameserver software on DNS was
upgraded. This should not have caused any interuption in service.
- April 22, 1998 7:05pm, Bell Atlantic has fixed the five
different problems that they've troubled us with today, including the
problem below.
- April 22, 1998 3:10pm, Bell Atlantic is experiencing a major failure
in their Frame Relay network system. This is causing a major disruption in
Internet connnectivity outside the MIS network. A trouble ticket has been
issued, and we will post info as we receive it. Outgoing mail will be spooled
for later delivery and incoming mail will be spooled by one of our stream
providers.
- April 9, 1998 8:00pm. Repairs were made in Washington
to correct a problem where ocassionally customers were not able to establish
a connection.
- April 8, 1998 11:00am. Some ISDN users were getting busy
signals when there were lines available. Sounds like another Bell Atlantic
problem. We've notified them and will keep you posted. Bell Atlantic fixed
this Friday morning.
- April 8, 1998 11:00am. Some people are having mailspinner login
trouble. We've contacted Mailspinner and are working on it.
- April 7, 1998 12:10pm. Bell Titanic is at it again. Both T1's
are down due to their inabilities. One T1 was fixed at 12:55pm, which
allows e-mail and webhosting traffic. We'll keep you posted. The second T1
was fixed at about 3:00pm.
- April 5, 1998 3:00am. The Ring No-Answer in Damariscotta was
traced to a bad port and has been corrected. The port and modem in
question were both indicating normal usage from the system side which
contibuted to the delay in repair. It was neccessary to reboot the Modem
server to activate the replacement port for the line.
- April 4, 1998 11:00am. A Damariscotta line is in a "ring/no-answer" state. We
are attempting to track it down without disrupting existing sessions. Please keep trying.
- April 3, 1998 3:05pm. Bell Atlantic is having Frame Relay
problems which are affecting our connectivity and some PoPs. We'll
keep you posted. Bell Atlantic corrected this at 4:15pm.
- April 3, 1998 We were having electrical trouble which is
causing busies on the X2 lines. We've corrected this: a UPS was being
troublesome.
- April 2, 1998 Most of the work installing new lines was
completed in Washington. Hurray! A bigger UPS was also installed which has
about 10x the capacity and duration through power failures. More bandwidth
(better throughput) is scheduled for Washington in the coming week.
- April 2, 1998 The data circuit between the Damariscotta NOC and
the Owls Head NOC was down from 12:45pm through 2:35pm Thursday afternoon
due to a Bell-Atlantic problem on the circuit. The circuit came back to
life after Bell Atlantic removed the test equipment. No explanation was
available at that time to explain the loss of connectivity.
- April 2/3, 1998 DNS will be rebooted at midnight. This will take about 5 minutes.
- April 1, 1998 . A software problem with the mailspinner program has been resolved by
replacing the licence information provided by Nascent Technologies. We called and received a
solution in mere moments. The licences had eroneously expired. It is good to deal with a company
that provides such great service!
- April 1, 1998 No Joke. We've received several pieces of
junk mail from a company known as HarvardNet. The address information was
taken right from Internic domain registration information. If you have a
domain and receive one of these, we'd recommend you throw it out, as our
experiences with the company are quite a bit different than they'd like
you to believe. We would also like to warn other people not to use their
sales tactics. If you received one of these, let us know!
