News & Notices
April 1999
- April 30, 1999 10:00am. SMTP mail services at lincoln.midcoast.com were inoperative for
several hours Friday morning as a result time mismatch, after a 3am backup/reboot of lincoln. All
incoming mail was spooled for delivery by remote or local mail servers and will be
despooling over the next few hours until midday.
- April 29, 1999 3:00pm. Setup of 3 new lines for Liberty were
completed.
- April 28, 1999 9:00am. Jason Philbrook attended a public
hearing in Augusta regarding
LD2155 which studies issues facilitating electronic commerce, consumer
privacy, unsolicited bulk email / spamming, hate mail, and pornography.
Jason spoke in favor of propositions to encourage high-tech business
development, and in favor of rules against spamming. Another ISP in
attendance also recommended Jason to be part of an appointed commision to
make sure internet users and businesses are properly represented.
Rules against spam would prevent Maine from being a source of spam email.
There is a popular state-by-state trend to restrict spam, causing the
market for such undesireable email to shrink or move elsewhere.
- April 25, 1999 3:30pm. The virtual webserver host "sumatra" was
rebooted after about 500 days of continuous service. This took about 5
minutes.
- April 23, 1999 Damariscotta - 1:00am. All the active
modem connections
disconnected at the same time with a resounding set of clicks. An inquiry will be made
to the telco to determine the source.
- April 21, 1999 Northland will be installing some additional
lines on the 27th for the 589-3380 Liberty access number.
- April 21, 1999 People who use 785-6123 (the original Union
number) should change to the newer Union number which is 785-6622. You
will have to log in with your full email address (someone@midcoast.com)
instead of just your username. Alternately, if you have the enhanced
calling, you can call a Rockland number.
- April 21, 1999 The peering link to/from gwi.net was down from
3am thru 10am due to a configuration change at GWI. Mail and web traffic
didn't flow during this time. All mail to/from gwi.net was spooled and
will be delivered within a few hours. The GWI web server has been down as
well. No other info was available.
- April 20, 1999 593-9397 is offically open for business as a new
V.90 number. (for people that can call Rockland without a toll, of course)
If your modem does not cooperate with the 593-9332 or the 593-8000 after
you've updated it to the newest code and followed our V90 tips, feel free
to use this number. It goes into a different brand of equipment than the
other numbers. If this number works better than the other number, use it.
The 9332/8000 numbers work well for most people, but we've had a few
people who could not get a good connection on the new V90 equipment, so
we've gone ahead and added a different manufacturer's equipment hoping to
assist customers with modem interoperability issues. We are the only ISP
with three different brands of modem banks in the Rockland area.
- April 19, 1999 An error with the time machine between April 17 and 19
has been corrected. Certain modem servers' logs had not been cleared. This has been
corrected.
- April 17, 1999 9:00am through most of the day The Linux
Installfest will be at our 25 Oak Street office instead of the
training center. Appropriate signage will be at both locations to direct
people to the proper facility.
- April 17, 1999
9:00am to late afternoon. MELUG Linux Installfest at the Midcoast Computer Training Center. This is an
opportunity to get Linux going with a little help from some friends. Trust
me, this is the only way to get started with Linux.
Follow the link below for details, and what to bring.
It's an all day event, so stop in as your schedule permits.
April InstallFest
- April 13, 1999 2:50pm.
We have a new V.90 access server for testing. The number is 593-9397.
(please be sure to type in the number correctly) This is 46 new V.90 lines
using a different brand of equipment than the other lines. It may work
better for some people, and worse or no difference for others.
- April 13, 1999 8:00am. Some people report not being able to
surf outside of the midcoast. We are investigating this at the very
moment. Update. Seems better about 9:00am. We are told that this is due to
a problem which was on an MCI connection between Portland and Boston, and
MCI is working on it.
- April 8, 1999 Who is on the modems has been updated to
show additioanal V90 information.
