August 2, 2006 With this hot and humid weather, lightning
season is in full effect. We often provide, and many customers use
additional lightning and surge protection. However, that little $20
(mostly sacrificial) protector is no match for the force of nature when
there is a close or direct lightning strike. The following steps might
save your from a service call (or worse, a shopping trip.)
If lightning is approaching, and don't need to use the Internet
during the storm, follow these steps:
1. power down the broadband equipment if you have it.
2. disconnect the phone line from your modem or the cat5 from your network connection.
3. Power down and unplug the computer.
