News & Notices
August 1999
- August 24, 1999 5 new lines are scheduled to be installed in
Liberty (589-3380)
- August 20-22, 1999 - The Damariscotta office of MIS has moved!
We will open up Monday morning at our new location, which is at the
northern junction of Business Route One and US Route One in Damariscotta.
Hours will be 9-6 M-T and 9-5 Friday. The phone numbers are the same.
- August 21, 1999 8:30-10:30pm. The main C&W internet connection
and the main router had trouble for a while. (It is fine now) We are
continuing to investigate its cause. This was causing some login problems
and transit problems.
- August 20, 1999 8:00am. The modem server that houses modems for
the 593-9397 had to be reset. It was causeing authenticating problems for
people trying to dialin. This server had been running for over 140 days.
- August 19, 1999 3:45pm. Our main internet connection is having
trouble, which affects browsing outside of midcoast.com. C&W, the provider
has been notified and sees a problem, and is working on finding its
source. Things might be up-again, down-again for a short time.
- August 19, 1999 10:00am. Some Camden wireless customers are
being affected by an upgrade to the wireless network this morning. 2:00pm
update: We are still working on it. A third hike up Ragged Mtn should be
fixing it soon.
- August 16, 1999 11:15-11:40 pm - The main internet connection to
C&W had a problem. We suspected a router problem (perhaps a T1 card problem)
so I replaced the zoombrew router. Things are happier now.
- August 16, 1999 The Owls Head omnidirectional wireless antenna
was upgraded this afternoon. This was upgraded from a 7.2dbi omni to a
12dbi omni with a bidirectional amplifier on it. These amps were
recently approved by the FCC and permit us to broadcast a much stronger signal.
This should theoretically triple the radius which this antenna covers and
provide a stronger signal to those that use it. Some other wireless sites
may eventually get these more powerful antennae as well.
- August 14, 1999 We have discovered, diagnosed, and fixed a
problem whereby a very small number of callers can not resolve hostnames
properly since the DNS upgrade. This has been fixed to the best of our
knowledge.
- August 12, 1999 The second PRI on 593-9397 had been out of
service due to a Bell Atlantic problem which we discovered and alerted
them to. The 593-9397 number should have double the capacity now (46 lines
total)
- August 12, 1999 We are having additional trouble with the T1 to
C&W (our main upstream) and are keeping an eye on things. We have another
router ready to replace our gear if necessary.
- August 12, 1999 2:00pm 26 lines were added to
to the hunt-group for 593-9332 3388667 8325779 5938000 and 2362809.
- August 12, 1999 12:30pm-1:15pm DNS had to rebooted due to
PEBKAC (operator error) on my part. Summer traffic and construction
traffic between Rockland and Owls Head caused this to take longer than
we hoped.
- August 11, 1999 4:00pm. A problem with our C&W main connection
to the internet began to have problems. It's fixed now, but we're not sure
how, so we're going to keep our eyes on it for a while.
- August 11, 1999 9:00am. A problem with username@midcoast.com
logging in as a result of the server switchover was corrected.
- August 11, 1999 00:10am-2:00am. The server "DNS" is being
replaced, and people should expect some disruption during this interval.
These disruptions will include not being able to log in or resolve
hostnames while one is being shut down and the other is brought up. While
unread email is being transfered prior to the switchover, there will be a
30 minute period where outgoing email may not work, and incoming email wil
be queued or diverted elsewhere for queing.
A new machine has been built and has been running for a couple of weeks
quite well. We have to copy some more files, shut the old computer down,
and restart the new machine as a replacement for DNS. This machine has
about a 50% faster processor, 8x the disk space, and 2x the memory. It is
also external RAID-5 which is a redundant hard drive system which should
make this very important computer extra reliable (even though we don't
have reliability problems now).
- August 10, 1999 5:18pm. Files in home directories uploaded
between now and midnight may have to be re-uploaded again in the morning
due to the change of server machines.
- August 9, 1999 2:59pm. A new modem server (columbian) with 20
V.90 modems was added to the hunt-group for 593-9332 3388667 8325779
5938000 and 2362809.
- August 7, 1999 7:30-7:40pm The router hectic.midcoast.com had
to be restarted. This affected access to the 593-9397 number for 10-15
minutes.
- August 5, 1999 4:42pm A new SSL certificate was installed on
www.midcoast.com allowing customers to do secure transactions free of
charge for another year.
- August 1, 1999 00:20am The T1 serving Liberty is down, and
Liberty is now running on a slower 56k backup circuit. If it follows
recent trend, there is a phone company problem. Northland will be notified
first thing in the morning and might get around to fixing it on a Sunday.
