December 2000
- December 31, 2000 10:30am. An auto accident knocked out power
in Owls Head. The way traffic was directed caused me to get to the NOC not
quite as soon as I'd have liked. 10 of the 11 UPSs lasted long enough for
the generator to start, and one didn't. This required restarting DNS and
grounds, which took about 30 minutes. The generator powered things as it
is supposed to. While DNS and grounds were being restarted, a variety of
temporary problems would have occurred such as not being able to log in.
Other things like virtual webhosting and T1s were fine because of the UPSs
and generator.
- December 28, 2000 The Sprint problem from yesterday is causing
trouble today. Sprint is replacing some equipment to fix this problem
(it's in Pensauken NJ), and this is causing the problems with it today.
Using the proxy server (address 10.0.0.3, port 8080) will get around this.
- December 27, 2000 3:00pm. One of the access points on top of
Ragged Mountain is acting up again. I will be going up in the morning to
swap out a networking hub. Clients associated with this AP should use
their back up dial account for the night. UPDATE: December 28, 2000
11:00am. We have replaced some gear on top of Ragged this morning and
everything appears to be working as it should be.
- December 27, 2000 9:30am. Some people can't get outside of
Midcoast. This is not a problem with our network, but appears to be a
strange problem inside of Sprint. Using the proxy server 10.0.0.3 port
8080 should get people around this while Sprint is working on the problem.
This won't get around problems where other sites are hosted with Sprint
connections (such as Ebay and others)
- December 20, 2000 6:45pm. The T1 to Washington is down. It is
being investigated. We've switched back to the other T1 and will
investigate the problem tomorrow.
- December 19, 2000 9:00-9:30pm. The modem server mexican in
Washington (845-2002) stopped responding. We were able to remotely turn
its power off and on with another piece of equipment we installed a few
months ago, saving a visit to Washington in this fine winter
weather, and getting it back working faster than ever.
- December 18, 2000 1:45am. The Damariscotta data-center is
without power. The system is now on generator. Update - The generator
was tipped over in a wind gust causing the NOC to go down from about 4am
to 6am. The loss of power caused file damage in a server. Rebuilding the
drive allowed for a system restart and the system is operational again.
Power is still out in Damariscotta as of 7:30am. Update - At 12:30 in
the afternoon, power was restored to the Damariscotta area. Ahhhh, there
is nothing like coffee, heat and a hot shower!
- December 13, 2000 4:20pm. The T1 for Washington and Liberty is down.
6:00pm. The T1 is back up and working properly after resetting some gear in Washington.
- December 13, 2000 8:20am. The ATT T1 is not working again. ATT
has been called and is working on it. Fixed at 11:00am.
- December 11, 2000 2:20pm. One of the T1's (ATT) is not working.
This prevents some dialup users from accessing things outside of
Midcoast.com. ATT is working on fixing it. This was fixed when I called in
for an update at 4:30pm. ATT had verizon test it, and verizon magically
and mysteriously fixed it, but forgot to hook the circuit back up after
they were done testing it. So the circuit stayed out of service till I
called in to complain (get an update) and ATT called verizon for an
update. No word on what the problem was.
- December 4, 2000 9:30am. A power outage in the North Damariscotta area, requiring the cutover to generator
power. There was no loss of services as a result of the failure as all hardware is protected and kept running via
Uniteruptable Power Supplies. The power came back on at approximately 11am.
- December 3, 2000 9:45pm. For a short time this evening, some
Damariscotta/Wiscasset customers had trouble logging in. This was found to
be a software problem and was corrected immediately.
- December 2, 2000 11:30pm. Washington and Liberty are on a new
and upgraded T1 internet connection back to our Owls Head center. This
will NOT affect connect rates, but will improve browsing and downloading
performance during late afternoon/evening.
