News & Notices
February 2000
- Feb 29, 2000 10pm. The T1 that serves Damariscotta was out for
about 15 minutes casuing login trouble and connectivity problems for those
customers. The hardware was reset and the connection was re-establlished.
The router in Owls Head that services the Damariscotta area is being
replaced asap.
- Feb 28, 2000 Due to trouble with the NNTP newsgroups company we
had been dealing with, we've changed our primary news server.
news.midcoast.com goes to a new system which is more reliable. If you need
to get into the old news server, it will be at news2.midcoast.com.
- Feb 25-26, 2000 00:40am. The T1 serving Damariscotta and points south was down for a while. It looks like
some sort of circuit trouble affected other links as well. This T1 required a power cycle to bring it back on line.
Trouble was reported on and off from about 11:20pm onward.
- Feb 25, 2000 11:20am. Bell Atlantic has finished the setup of
46 new lines on our other hunt group. (These are some of the lines we'd
been waiting for since the beginning of December) Hurray!
- Feb 25, 2000 10:00am. We've received word from Northland
telephone that V90 will be doable for us in Liberty (589). We will post an
installation date as soon as we get one from them. We expect it won't be
more than a couple weeks. They are MUCH more responsive than Bell
Atlantic.
- Feb 25, 2000 6:30-8:30am. Trouble with dns.midcoast.com caused
login trouble and other problems at varying times during this period. DNS
was restarted OK and things are fine.
- Feb 21, 2000 8:15-8:30pm A problem with the main router
zoombrew2 caused trouble for about 15 minutes.
- Feb 18, 2000 Noon. A configuration error was isolated in the
Tidewater switch, that has been affecting
service to v.90/56k users at the MIS Damariscotta POP for the last 1-3 months. The symptoms of this situation were
frequent disconnects, inability to connect and connection followed by Internet lockup. We want to thank all those who
helped us track this down and get it fixed.
- Feb 17, 2000 3:30 pm. NoDoze was reset again in order to help
isolate the problem.
- Feb 17, 2000 2pm. The last 24 modems in the v.90/56k chain
serving Damariscotta have been disabled. Testing
has indicated that there is a configuration/provisioning error somewhere out side the MIS system. This will result in
BUSY signals, until such time as Tidewater is able to isolate the line problem. The inability of these lines to
operate properly has been causing connection/disconnection/connect and freeze problems. It is better to present a busy
and lines that work, than lines that do not work all. Tidewater is working on the line as we type.
- Feb 17, 2000 Noon. The modem server Nodoze was reset and a
slight configuration change was made. It is
hoped that this will isolate some of the dialup problems that have been intermittantly affecting some customers in
the Damariscotta area.
- Feb 15, 2000 2:30pm. The new time machine (Time Machine II) now
has a link on our website's main page. It has been revised again today to
now include both @midcoast.com users and @lincoln.midcoast.com users. It
also sends a seperate report which includes an Accounted Time
column to show usage excluding Midnight to 10am. This is still in testing,
so please report any questions or problems to help@midcoast.com. Todays
revisions have a new URL which is on the homepage. The old URL (such as in
the newsletter) is not the lastest version of the Time Machine II.
Update: the midnight-10am portion is not working properly.
- Feb 15, 2000 2:15pm. Washington now has 48 V90/56k lines
instead of 24 (845-2002). Two of the 33.6 lines had to be unhooked to
accomodate the expansion, but usage has decreased on the 33.6 lines
(845-2080/845-3050) so there won't be a problem. Liberty will be the next
Northland serviced town to get V90/56k. We will post information on that
when the time gets closer.
- Feb 15, 2000 3:30am - 4:00am. We had some trouble with two of
our T1s this morning in the wee hours, a problem with the software drivers
actually for the router.
- Feb 14, 2000 Happy Valentines Day. Last week, Bell Atlantic was
able to finish the configuration of 69 new v90 lines for us. These are on
5939397, 2362266, as well as 338 and 832 numbers. This is 3/5 of the
order we have with BA for new lines. The others will be hooked up as soon
as an equipment issue is worked out with Lucent. Those will be on 593-9332
and the other 236, 832, and 338 numbers.
- Feb 7, 2000 7:40pm. For a short time, email was unable to be
sent. This did not affect mail being checked, and no incoming email was
lost.
- Feb 7, 2000 The webserver named whoopie-pie.midcoast.com was
replaced by luwak.midcoast.com at 12:30pm today. This incurred no downtime
or outage for people on the webserver. Whoopie-pie had been having some
annoying hard drive trouble, so we moved people off it before it caused
any service problems. Luwak is a new Athlon500 with 128MB of ECC ram, and
7200 RPM IBM 20GB hard drive using the very newest Apache and Redhat
Linux.
- Feb 1, 2000 Everyone with an @midcoast.com address should have
received a newsletter by email now. If not, we have a copy here.
