Midcoast Internet Solutions
System
News & Notices
February 1999
- February 26, 1999: The mail systems on lincoln.midcoast.com
were down for 10 minutes this
morning. A re-boot of the server also prevented logins and mail traffic
for that time. Systems are
operating normally now.
- February 25, 1999: The Mailspinner program was restarted at
10am after
refusing to respond.
- February 24, 1999 - Wiscasset Users: Woo-Hoo! Bell Atlantic
will be cutting over service to
the new POP and Hardware in Wiscasset on Tuesday March 2nd. There will be
a new phone number that can be
used by Wiscasset, Bath and Brunswick customers and the old 882 number
will stay in service. Both
numbers will point to the same systems.
- February 22, 1999 - Wiscasset Users: We completed testing on
the new lines. All of them
passed with flying colors with connects of at least 50k!
- February 22, 1999 - Wiscasset Users: The new incoming telephone
lines were
activated today at the new digs in downtown Wiscasset! We are testing the
modems and
lines (although it all looks good from initial calls into each line). We
will pull the
trigger on moving the data circuit to the new location . BA will need some
time to make
that happen, but we expect it will be within a week. Their will be a NEW
number for
Brunswick, Bath, and any area that calls the 442 or 443 exchange as a
local number.
Wiscasset users will be able to use the new or old number. Edgecomb,
Boothbay Area and
Southport users will still use 882-9664. The new lines will support 56k
v.90
connections. We will announce the new number as soon as we have a firm
date for the
move.
- February 22, 1999 - Washington Users: The phone company went to
install the new lines after we ordered them 4 weeks ahead of time, and
didn't like the arrangement on the pole. CMP is coming out at their
earliest
convenience - March 2, to rewire the pole. Then the phone lines can be
installed.
Hopefully March 2 or March 3. It'd be nice if the phone company had
checked
the situation out for new service earlier than the day before they were
due.
That's one of the reason's we gave them SO MUCH advanced notice when
placing
the order for the lines.
- February 19, 1999 Wireless news: The Benner Hill (Rockland)
repeater site is up and running. This assists in serving Rockland, Owls
Head, Thomaston, the Thomaston-Rockland stretch, and parts of Warren.
As mentioned in the newsletter, Ragged Mtn. (Camden/Rockport) is also
running smoothly.
- February 18, 1999 We completed FTP server software upgrades on
all of our servers today.
- February 17, 1999 A problem with the 593-8000 number was
diagnosed and fixed.
- February 17, 1999 The Liberty exchange (589) hunting problem
has been reported to Northland. This is said to be fixed by Terry at
3:12pm.
- February 16, 1999 It has been discovered that half of the new
lines recently installed in Liberty (589) are not hunting properly.
This was causing only 10 lines to be available out of 12.
Northland will be contacted about this in the morning.
- February 15, 1999 The Wiscasset service installation has been
put off, by Bell Atlantic, until the 26th of March. This represents an
additional 8-10 day delay from BA on this order. No reason is being given
at this time. We have talked to the BA rep and expect an additional update
tomorrow, when BA resumes operations.
- February 12, 1999 4:00pm Bell Atlantic has replaced a faulty
"doubler" in the data circuit between Owls Head and the Rockland CO. This
trouble started last night at about midnight, was called in to C&W at 1am:
They tested at 4am and turned the problem over to Bell: Bell started
testing (without notice) at Noon and the fix was on. Testing of these
cicuits requires that they be taken out of service. This caused some
customers the inablility to connect to internet sites outside the MIS
system.
- February 12, 1999 3:00pm The trouble with the C&W link was
located. Bell Atlantic is repairing a bad repeater in the data circuit to
the MIS NOC in Owls Head. Service should be restored very soon.
- February 12, 1999 1:00pm Bell Atlantic was testing our T1 line
to C&W around noon. This affected some users. The circuit is still showing
errors and we anticipate more disruptions in service in order to identify
and repair the problem. Updates here as we have them.
- February 11, 1999 A newsletter is being sent out by email over
the next few hours to everyone with an @midcoast.com address. A link to
the newsletter is here.
- February 11, 1999 12:15-12:25am The memory was sucessfully
replaced on DNS. This should improve it's reliability.
- February 10, 1999 Noon. 2 Modem banks were reset in an attempt
to clear a stuck modem that is/was causing a ring-no-answer on the 5636644
number. Please let us know if you ever encounter this kind of problem. Use
the Trouble Ticket form or
send us an email.
- February 10, 1999 9:30am. DNS had an unscheduled reboot. It was
attended to immediately. New memory will be arriving for this machine
today, and will be installed tonight - at about midnight.
- February 3, 1999 Bell Atlantic gave us an estimate of "no
sooner than February 15th" on the new services we ordered for
Wiscasset two weeks ago. The new POP in Wiscasset will replace the
current POP, and will expand available lines from the current 10 to 23.
The new equipment will also support 56k connections and will add all of
the Brunswick area to the MIS local calling area.
- February 2, 1999 The original 785 Union POP is having trouble
the the leased line feeding it. Bell Atlantic has been notified and is
working on it. In the mean time, we'd recommend the new 785 number which
we've been talking about.
- February 2, 1999 The new Union and Damariscotta V90 lines
are available for use. The numbers are 785-6622 and 563-6622. Union
customers should sign in with your full email address instead of just the
username. This represents 48 new lines - 24 for each exchange.
- February 01 1999 dns.midcoast.com was had an unscheduled
reboot this evening at about 9:30. This was corrected within 15-20
minutes.
- February 01 1999 5:00pm A problem with 593-8000 was tracked
down and corrected. 7:00pm., a problem with authenticating on the
columbian.midcoast.com modem server was also corrected.
- February 01 1999 New Lines are available for testing in
the Damariscotta and Union areas. There are 24 lines in Union, and 24 new
lines in Damariscotta. The new numbers are 563-6622 and 785-6622. These
lines are capable of "better than 33.6k" connections when used with a v.90
capable modem. Please read more about the system and use the Testing Feedback Form
to report on your experience with the new lines & modems. If you log
into this modem server, please log in with your full email address
