January 1997 Archive
- January 31, 1997 Right on schedule, we have our new Rockland
POP running. The main number there is 596-2430. We currently have 48
modems running out of 85 lines at that location; the others will be added
as needed. If this is local for you, and you can change the number you
dial, you'll likely find that this is a very high quality dialin
number.
- January 30, 1997 Our server (dns or rtfm) went down for about
15 minutes today at 12:30. We are investigating the cause.
- January 30, 1997 Nynex is finishing up the installation and
doing final testing in Rockland today for our new POP. We will be hooking
up the modems today, and letting everyone know what the numbers are when
we are ready.
- January 30, 1997 News server is not taking in new news at the
moment. We will be out re-aligning the dish or doing whatever is
necessary this evening.
- January 27, 1997 A Newsletter was sent out to
everybody. Incase you lost it, or incase you didnt get it, you can read it
here.
- January 21, 1997 A Warning about
goodtimes virus, Redneck Computer Lingo (fwd)
- January 17, 1997 Nynex fixed their fast busies problem. Things
are quite a bit better at peak times as a result.
- January 15, 1997 Nynex is still causing us grief with fast
busies. Fast busies are a Nynex switching problem that causes
random people not to be able to get through to us in the evening hours.
They have been notified and claim that they will fix it today.
- January 9, 1997 Nynex has fixed the no-answer problems. As it
turns out, a few days ago, a Nynex technician had installed a 56k
Frame Relay circuit right smack in the middle of a hunt group for no
apparent reason. Frame Relay circuits don't work well with regular phone
calls. They would have known this had they tested it afterwards. Someone
else stopped in this evening and found and corrected the problem.
- Also,
there have been busies at strange times here. Fast busies on our home
phone, the oil company, and MIS/Rockbound lines. Fast busies are a telco
switch problem which we also have Nynex working on.
- January 9, 1997 We fixed a problem with the time machine on the
new server.
- January 8, 1997
We have tracked down a couple of dead phone lines in our modem
pools. This is the result of a Nynex misconfiguration and was causing
the no-answer/busy problems that so many of you are experiencing. Nynex
promises to fix it on Thursday (tomorrow). Thank you *very* much for your
patience. Midcoast Internet Solutions will never willingly allow busies or
constant no-answers to be a part of our services.
- January 8, 1997 AOL user might take note of this if you are getting bumped off of AOL.
- January 8, 1997 There are some reported problems of no-answer
on some of the modems. Let us know by email (webmaster@midcoast.com) when
this happens. We are trying to track down whether this is a phone company
problem or a modem problem, and need to know *when* this happens to
people. Some people have reported this happens in the evening,
other people noticed it in the morning. (when most of the modems are
free) Also, note if it was a no-answer, a fast busy, or a normal busy that
you received. Thanks for your help.
- January 7, 1997 A login problem was corrected in washington,
and the modems were replaced with a USR Total Control modem rack.
- January 6, 1997 A no answer problem was discovered with a few
of our modems (It doesnt take many to mess things up). This will be
corrected ASAP.
- January 5, 1997 There was abnormally high usage of modems last
night. GAK, there were even a few busy signals! We work hard to prevent
this!
- January 5, 1997. 1am We are operating on a new server
that
replaces dns.midcoast.com for many functions. All things should be OK, as
we have been planning this upgrade carefully for a month. If you notice
any problems as a result of the switch, notify us immediately. Thanks!
The new server is about six times faster, and is much more expandable. It
is also powered by a 1000va UPS. This helps up provide the fastest and
most reliable service possible.
- January 4/5, 1997 DNS will not available at midnight
for about 10 minutes while we move things over to a new server.
- January 4, 1997 We will be moving files over to a new faster
server today, so please do not make ftp uploads between 3 and 4:30pm. All
other services should not be affected. Thanks.
- January 3, 1997Nynex has informed us that ISDN is not quite
available in our area yet and is past its original installation deadline.
We are placing an order and hope to be one of their first to have it.
- January 2, 1997 Our 596-7248 fax machine is flaky. We will
be replacing the fax machine asap, and it is now hooked upto a computer to
answer the faxes.
- January 1, 1997 Between 10:30pm and 1am, there was a problem
south of us (completely beyond our control) which affected our internet
connectivity during that time.
