News & Notices
January 1999
- January 30, 1999 11:00pm. The mailspinner program was restarted
on the midcoast.com server.
- January 30, 1999 2:00pm. The router netwinder was replaced
in Rockland today. This affected ISDN users for a few moments.
- January 29, 1999 A problem with Washington and Belfast login
was corrected by 9am. This was a result of the changes earlier this
morning.
- January 29, 1999 The MCI/CW T1 will be hooked to a different
router in Owls Head at 12:30am. This was completed quickly, and most of
the routes were rebuilt by 1:30am.
- January 28, 1999 the MCI/CW T1 will be tested for a short time
between 2 and 3am. This is due to packet loss problems we have reported to
them.
- January 27, 1999 The Wiscasset modem server was rebooted at
12:10 today in an attempt to remotely clear a stuck modem. It failed. A
power cycle of the modems will be performed at 1pm today to clear the
stuck line.
- January 27, 1999 Users of the southern part of the MIS service
area will notice that their browser will automatically load the main MIS
web page. The "lincoln.midcoast.com" URL can still be used, but it now
points to "www.midcoast.com". This only affects the main web page.
- January 26, 1999 A small security configuration prevented
people, using the newly added lines in Libery, from sending mail outside
of Midcoast from their computer. This has been fixed.
- January 26, 1999 The leased line serving the Union POP is down.
Bell Atlantic is aware of this and is working on it.
- January 25, 1999 Liberty (589) has had some new equipment
hooked up. We have 4 more lines going there now (a 50% increase).
- January 25, 1999 Tidewater is moving a few of the dialup lines
that service the Damariscotta POP to facilitate the installation of new
leased lines. This will cause some extremely brief trouble on the lines
being moved, such as disconnections or other line related trouble. Once
the lines are moved we well test them again to make sure they are
functioning correctly. They should be done by mid afternoon.
- January 20, 1999 10:00am The Bell Atlantic T1 to Belfast is
down. We have notified Bell Atlantic and expect a fix right away.
- January 19, 1999 Tidewater has given an installation date of
February 1 for the new v.90 lines in Union, and the new v.90 lines in
Damariscotta.
- January 17, 1999 20:00, There is a fiber cut on the C&W (formerly MCI) network that is
causing a higher than
normal flow through some parts of the C&W network as they divert traffic around the cut.
- January 17, 1999 18:00, Some errors have been noted on the MCI
T1 to Boston. We have crossed checked the packet loss and have verified
that it is an MCI problem. A trouble ticket is being entered with MCI and
an update will be posted here when it becomes available. (Packet loss
will result in pages taking longer to load at times. The problem is
extremely sporadic and may not affect all users.
- January 15, 1999 23:40, the local irc server is fixed to permit
more connections. It is currently irc.midcoast.com.
- January 15, 1999 An order was placed with Tidewater today for new services
for the Union and Damarscotta areas. These services will allow MIS to install NEW! v.90
capable modems and to deliver higher connection speeds than have previously been
available. Customers of the Union area will see a 3 fold increase in available lines, as
well as the potential for connect speeds higher than the current potential max of 33.6.
Damariscotta POP users will also see this same service ability. This is not
true 56k service but will allow 56k modems to be used to potentially obtain higher
connect speeds. The difference between this service and standard 56k service is in how
the telephone company handles the call. True 56k services will only be available when
Tidewater upgrades its equipment over the next few years. In the mean time connect rates
will depend heavily on your location and your modem. Tidewater expects to these new
services up within 2-4 weeks.
- January 14, 1999 MIS has signed a lease on new space in Wiscasset. The new
facility will service the exisiting customers of the Bath, Wiscasset and Boothbay areas
and will add the Brunswick to the local calling area of this POP. All New! v.90 modem
equipment is being installed and the capacity of the POP is being more than doubled. It
is anticipated that Bell Atlantic will have this work completed within 4 weeks.
- January 14, 1999 MIS has just signed a contract and placed
an order for 276 new phone lines with Bell Atlantic. These will be all
V90 (56k) service. About 100 lines out of the new 276 will be for
expansion, (much needed) and the rest of the lines will be upgrades for
our 33.6 lines and our X2 lines. There will be Belfast, Rockland, Camden,
and Waloboro numbers for accessing this equipment. This will be connected
to our multiple-T1 internet access in Owls Head, using all new modem
server equipment. This will eliminate ocassional 2430 and 8000 trouble by
virtue of having all new equipment. We expect about a four week
installation schedule for the first 69 lines. This deal has been several
months in the making and the hard work will pay off.
- January 12, 1999 We are in the process of negotiating a special
order for Union (785 exchange) which will permit V90 service in the 785
exchange. This order will also triple the number of lines available in
Union. We expect a three week installation schedule. This will provide
Union with 24 lines, all V90 access (if customers' lines support it), and
be connected to the internet (and our network) at T1 speed.
- January 11, 1999 8:00am. The phone lines that were supposed to
have installed a month ago in Liberty were not properly installed. We
reported this to Northland, and they expressed they'd fix this within a
day. Update: Jan 12, Northland has fixed the lines. We will be attaching
modems to them Wednesday morning. Weather prevented us from attaching them
this morning (the 12th).
- January 6, 1999 5:15pm. A ring-no-answer was fixed on 593-8000.
We think it's due to a misconfigured ISDN line, so we took the problem
line out of the hunt-group so as not to affect anyone.
- January 5, 1999 10:00pm. the server midcoast.com had
an unscheduled reboot. All is fine now and nothing was lost.
- January 5, 1999 A login problem was fixed in Washington.
- January 1, 1999 The V90 modem server nuthercupfull.midcoast.com
will be rebooted early in the morning for an upgrade. here
is a link to Lucent's notes about the upgrade. It sounds like the upgrade
is a good thing to do. We have tested the upgrade on another unit and
things worked nicely.
