News & Notices
June 1998
- June 29, 1998 One malfunctioning X2 line was detected and fixed
today. This had been causing "no-carrier" and other inability to connects.
- June 24, 1998 The modem server switchover went well.
In addition to javajoe being removed, filter and frappe were added to the
lineup, and 10 new modems were installed to replace storm damaged ones.
A dead ISDN line was unhooked and reported to the Bell Titanic repair
also; it had been affecting the X2 numbers.
- June 24, 1998 the Whoopie-pie modem server will be out of
service for about 5 minutes during the morning to be replaced with a new
modem server. Whoopie-pie will then replace the Javajoe modem server.
- June 23, 1998 www.midcoast.com now has secure server software
running. This allows you secure web-page traffic by means of built in
encryption. In order to use that, you should use https:// in your link
instead of http:// . Please use https only for things which make sense to
be encrypted, such as order forms or other sensitive information. Right
now, we are using a test certificate, so your browser may show a warning
message. Soon we will have an official certificate from Thawte.
- June 20, 1998 We have a Belfast access number now. Tell
your friends. It will be available for "testing" (no charge) for a couple
weeks. The number is 338-9146. If you can call this number locally, please
feel free to use it and report any problems which might be related to the
new number.
- June 19, 1998 A routing problem at Agate (one of our upstream providers) has created a
situation whereby mail and other traffic going between MIS and ONF.COM is not functional. This is not
an MIS or ONF problem and has been reported to Agate as of 1pm today. A "fix" should be in place soon.
- June 17, 1998 The T1 to Wiscasset went out of service at 10:46 am.
A Ticket has been called in to Bell Atlantic. No services are available in
Wiscasset as a result of this outage. This outage is NOT an MIS problem. Outage ended at noon.
- June 16, 1998 The Damariscotta reconfiguration went well, and
it is using all MCI IP numbers now. This should provide extra speed and
reliability for Damariscotta and Wiscasset users.
- June 16, 1998 1:00 AM. One of our main routers, entropy
was upgraded. This had no effect on most customers, except to provide
future capabilities, and to aid the Damariscotta upgrade.
- June 15, 1998 Midnight. The Damariscotta NOC will be down at
midnight to facilitate the renumbering to the MCI numbers. This outage
should last no more than 45-60 minutes, possibly much shorter. Dialup
services will be discontinued at Midnight and reactivated as soon as
possible.
- June 15, 1998 1:00 AM. Damariscotta POP. More testing will
occur in the wee hours using different equipment and modems.
- June 14, 1998 4:00 AM. Damariscotta POP. A faulty modem cable
was replaced. This was causing a ring-no-answer. All modems and lines were
tested.
- June 11, 1998 8:30 PM. A short outage occured on one of our upstream connections to the net.
We were able to reroute services to another pipe to detour around the trouble.
- June 11, 1998 Noon. replacement equipment installed earlier
this morning was removed and replaced due to reliability trouble and
ring-no-answer. At 11am, the 354 number was also moved to a more reliable
modem pool.
- June 11, 1998 0:00 - 3:00am. Lines in the 2430 group were down
for a while during which time we rewired and re-organized equipment to
make it more reliable and Bell Atlantic proof. We arrived and found that
the door to the machine room had been shut by Bell Atlantic workers,
causing the temperature to rise to sauna temperatures. Had it become any
hotter, it would have caused many connection problems and general
unreliability. We also removed some of the bad modems which were damaged
from lightning and replaced them with new ones, making a few more lines
available for use. More lines will be available, as more replacement
equipment is added on in the next few days.
- June 8, 1998 8 lines were hooked up to new equipment today on
the 596-2430 number. Additional lines will be hooked up over the next day
or two.
- June 7, 1998 Maintenance is being performed on the Damariscotta NOC
from Midnight to 3am on Monday June 8th. More
here.
- June 5, 1998 Dama. The Outgoing mail server software on lincoln
stopped responding sporadically at 3:30 am through 6:30. Systems were
rebooted at 8:30. We are investigating the cause.
- June 3, 1998 5pm We've removed all the damaged equipment from
the 5962430 hunt group, which should stop troublesome connections. This
leaves us with about 20 fewer lines. (those lines are busied-out)
Replacement equipment will arrive soon and we will hook those lines back
in for full availability. The 593-8000 number is also available as an
alternative if trouble arises in the future.
- June 3, 1998 2pm One of our four T1 paths are down, affecting
very little. Other traffic has been rerouted via a better path. 5pm.
Fixed.
The provider of this T1 has been notified and is working on it.
- June 2, 1998 A new virtual webserver has been added
to the lineup; latte.midcoast.com. It's a high end pentium with the latest
and greatest internet/web serving software installed. MIS is fairly unique
in the local ISP community due to the
fact that we only connect a small number of virtual web customers to a
server (dedicated to the task). This provides much more availability and
consistent performance than companies that "put all their eggs in one
basket" with a single server machine.
- June 2, 1998 A technician is still fixing lightning damaged
modems on the 354 and 596 numbers.
- June 1, 1998 Line problems in the 596-2430 were fixed. 9 bad
modem ports were unhooked, presumably due to lightning damage.
- June 1, 1998 Dama. Maintainence was performed on the Dama NOC from
midnight through 3:30 am. Some modem sessions were disconnected briefly during
this time. 16 new modems were put in service.
