Company and System News
May 1996 Archive
- Thursday 05/30/1996. 2xcaffeine will be down at approximately
midnight for 30-40 minutes to add serial ports (for more modems) and to swap
motherboards with a spare machine (to help build another webserver)
- Thursday 05/30/1996. Two modems were added in Owls Head to prevent
possible busy signals. A total of 8 new modems will be installed in the
next 48 hours to increase availability for 596, 236, and 354 callers.
- Thursday 05/30/1996. One phoneline out of four was unhooked
from the phone system and attached to the fax machine to dedicate the fax
machine and remove it from the voicemail system. For a portion of the
afternoon, a small percentage of callers to the 594-8277 number were
greeted by a fax machine. This was fixed as soon as nynex was able to
change the hunt system. The change was necessary, as the voicemail system
had been accidentally knocking a few people into fax mode. Now the two
systems are isolated.
- Wednesday 05/29/1996. Debbie at Tidewater Telecom called to
tell us that they replaced some repeaters in the 785 exchange's central
office. They had been causing us trouble with the 785-6123 and 845-6123
lines and other people in the community had been having similar troubles.
Let Midcoast Internet Solutions know if things have not improved!!!
- Monday 05/27/1996. Users of the 563-6644 server (lincoln) were
unable to get very far for a portion of the afternoon, as the T1 going there
went down. Tidewater was notified and it was fixed an hour or two later.
- Friday 05/24/1996. Jim brought over some new mac disks. These
contain new instructions and better support for the Open-Transport, which
comes with all new macs and is part of the 7.5.3 software release which
many people are beginning to use. To obtain a copy, bring 3 brand-new disks
(which have never been used in your computer) in exchange for the
3-disk mac software update. Don't fix what aint broken, so the saying
goes. So if things are working now, leave it alone, but if you are
getting a new computer or upgrading your operating system, keep this in
mind.
- Friday 05/24/1996. Tidewater is working on the lines again,
hopefully to resolve some of the disconnects and trouble connecting. This
caused access to be un-available for a portion of the afternoon, and this
is necessary work. In the future if access is needed and
things are not funtioning, a call (a toll) to the 596-7611 will do in a
pinch.
- Thursday Morning 05/23/1996. Sprint had trouble making about
half the net innaccessble. This was fixed by 8am.
- Wednesday Noon 05/23/1996. Half of the Union (785) lines are
determined to be unreliable.
- Tuesday Noon 05/21/1996. Union/Washington lines fixed and
working.
- Tuesday Morning 05/21/1996. Union/Washington lines not
working. Tidewater told us that recent thunder and lightning is the cause
of the loss-of-service and that linemen are currently working on fixing it.
- Meet our staff
- 05/20/1996 midnight. lincoln.midcoast.com (563) had two more
modems added.
- 05/11/1996 2am. Midcoast's IRC server was unavailable while the
DEC rz55 (full-height 4-year old SCSI) was replaced with a newer, faster,
higher-capacity, and quieter Fujitsu M1606SAU SCSI-II drive. Local IRC
services were restored first thing in the morning. Many thanks to an
expert at Sandia National Laboratories who helped, over the net, with the
hardware upgrade.
- 05/11/1996 1am lincoln.midcoast.com (the server for the 563
exchange) had a hardware and kernel upgrade to allow for additional modems.
- 05/09/1996 A Sony 4X SCSI cd-rom drive was added to the network.
If any good shareware discs become available, we will give access to anyone
on the network.
- 05/08/1996 A consultant was hired to research
modem-not-answering problem on the 785/845 exchange's modem server
