- November 29, 1997 We have had trouble with a bad modem on the
236 number. We think we've corrected it but will keep an eye on it. If you
have trouble with that number, email me with the time and date of your
trouble (webmaster@midcoast.com).
- November 27, 1997 15:30 Happy Thanksgiving! The Damariscotta
NOC is currently running on generator power as a result of a power
failure. Line power was restored 20 minutes later, but the generator was
left to run for 6 hours while we went to Grandma's for T-Giving dinner!

unaffected.

accomplish a kernel upgrade for improved speed and security. This will
take about 5 minutes.

(845). Northland Telephone company gave us an install date of Tuesday the
25th. This will bring the total to 10 lines for the 845 exchange.

took about 15 minutes.
- November 10, 1997 4:00pm. We completely removed the account of
a spammer without warning. The person had sent thousands and thousands
and thousands of pieces of email trying to peddle prefabricated cedar log
cabins. We stopped the spam at the source. As a result of this person's
work, MIS staff will spend a great deal of time responding to angry email
from all over the world. We've lost one customer, but we have to stick to
our acceptable use policy, and have an obligation to make the internet a
better place.
- November 9, 1997 6:30pm. Generator tests at the
Damariscotta NOC a huge success. The entire NOC and POP system has
been on a generator for over 2-1/2 hours in the first dry run. The Dama
NOC is subject to multiple extended power outages every year, and in the
past the battery backups have been ok for 1 to 6 hours. This new Honda 5.5
HP. 1800 watt unit will run for over 10 hours and will be more than up to
the task of keeping MIS online even when CMP and you aren't! MIS will be
adding additional generator(s) to the system over the coming months.
- November 4, 1997 U.S. Senate panel approves Internet tax bill
restricting states and localities from imposing new taxes on Internet
Services. This is
good.
- November 3, 1997 Monday Noon. The T1 to Wiscasset is back!
Bell Atlantic has, once again, replaced some equipment in Wiscasset. We
will have the 56k circuit that used to service that POP in place and ready
to act as a backup by the end of the day.
- November 3, 1997 Monday 7:00 am. No rest for the weary. The
Wiscasset T1 is still down, due to Bell Atlantic problems. We have power
at both ends, but no circuit.
- November 3, 1997 Monday 5:45 am. There was yet another outage
in Damariscotta from 4:14 through 5:45. Some dialup services were lost
during this outage. Mail, Web and Routing serices were not affected.
- November 2, 1997 Sunday 7:30 pm. Wiscasset power is back on and
the generator gets a rest, BUT the T1 to Wisc is now down. It died within
seconds of the power coming back on in Wiscasset.
- November 2, 1997 Sunday 3:00 pm. Wiscasset is still without
power. The system is running on a generator, courtesey of Dan O'Connell.
Power outages have hit most areas of the coastal region very hard. MIS
will try to maintain this temporary arrangement.
- November 2, 1997 Sunday 6:00am.
The Wiscasset POP lost power at approximately 2:30am. Large branches have

Sunday morning. Modems were held for an hour by Backup power. Servers and
routers were kept online until 4:30am, at which time it was necessary to
shut down as a result of the continued power outage. Power was restored at
6:15am.
