October 29, 1998 9:00pm. 3 more lines were installed in Washington. The phone company was able to point out where they had been installed. They are not part of the hunt group though. We have contacted Lori at Northland at 11am on Oct 30, as they were supposed to be part of the hunt group. This is the major reason they are unusable. They expect the hunting problem to be corrected today. We have also asked for a refund on those lines which we have been billed for and unable to use. Shall we use the refund to throw a party for Washington?
October 29, 1998 If you use Email from more than one computer, please uncheck the "leave mail on server" option and download ALL of your email. Many people's email boxes are getting VERY full due to the people leaving old email on the server. Thanks! After completing this, feel free to re-check the box as it was before.
October 26, 1998 2:00pm. A ring-no-answer on the X2/V90 which developed was quickly corrected. We attribute it to a messed up ISDN line.
October 25, 1998 8:30pm. Severe networking problems between national networks (MCI, UUnet, Sprint, and others) has caused some sites to be slow or unusable. Sprint was totally ofline at 6:30 this morning for instance! Things are starting to get better as the "big boys" sort it out. MIS has kept our upstream connections informed of the trouble, and there is nothing more than can be done from this end for immediate technical solutions. An interesting site from another company's perspective is at www.internetweather.com.
October 22, 1998 11:00am. Two more X2/90 modems were installed. Four more non-X2/non-V90 modems were installed for non-X2 Rockland and Camden callers.
October 21, 1998 3:30pm. I visited Northland Telephone in Morrill with photos of our Washington numbers' interface boxes. I asked where the lines were that we'd ordered and why people were getting busies if we had lines that had been installed but not hooked up. Nobody was able to help me there, but promised to take the materials I had prepared to an engineer. When they answer this, more lines will be available in Washington. I really think anything more than a few phone lines is too confusing for them.
October 19, 1998 4:00pm. Two More X2/V90 modems were found to be causing trouble. These were unhooked. Eight new X2/V90 modems were installed. This should FURTHER increase availability and reliability for X2/V90 dialin.

October 16, 1998 4:00pm. Two X2/V90 modems which were causing trouble were removed and Eight new X2/V90 modems were installed. This should increase availabilty for X2/V90 dialin. Eight additional modems will be installed during the next couple of days.
October 15, 1998 Some users have been having trouble with busies. We are working on adding more equipment and are aware. Hopefully half a dozen new lines will be installed today.
October 14, 1998 Ebay usage was reported to be unreliable this afternoon. We have traced this problem to Exodus.net's cross-country backbone. Exodus is EBAY's ISP. Not much can be done here, as it's a problem from several other test points as well, such as NY, PA, GA, and even MIT in MA. Update Oct 15. Ebay works a lot faster now. I emailed MCI and Exodus and they both pointed the finger at each other when I expressed the problem and my concern. Well, it's about 95% better now. Hmmm.
October 13, 1998 A typo in a configuration file shut down logins for Damariscotta users for about 25 minutes around 6pm this evening.
October 13, 1998 Spaces in your username will no longer work. If you have trouble signing on, make sure there are no spaces before or after your username.
October 12, 1998 12:30am. A new version of the Radius authentication software will be installed on midcoast.com. This should not affect any service.
October 10, 1998 5:00pm. A faulty fiber-optics tranceiver was replaced in the Owls Head NOC. This only affected Owls Head based wireless customers.
October 9, 1998 5:00pm. New software was loaded onto the 596-2410 modem server. Comments regarding how it works should be sent to webmaster@midcoast.com.
October 8, 1998 4:00pm. Bell Atlantic fixed the ISDN hunting problem.
October 6, 1998 10:00am. 596-2400 ISDN hunting problems are not being fixed by Bell Atlantic. We've manually configured something as a workaround for this until BA gets it fixed.
October 6, 1998 9:00am. Lucent says they will be calling us today to help fix some of the complaints on the new v90 equipment on 596-2410. We eagerly await their call.
