September 1996 Archive
- Sept 28, 1996 The TIME MACHINE for www.midcoast.com is
broken. We will be fixing it Monday morning. The caffeine crash and
the
modem server upgrade in Union has messed it up.
- Sept 25, 1996 Caffeine suffered a terrible crash at about
11:30 pm. A replacement machine with similar functionality,
halfnhalf was installed and was operating within a half hour.
HalfnHalf will remain in place until caffeine is repaired.
- Sept 25, 1996 This afternoon, we replaced the operating system
in the Union modem server with a newer version. People were having trouble
connecting over the past 24 hours. We hope this will make things quite
a bit better. If there is no improvement, by all means, let us know!
- Sept 24, 1996 The new Washington server, jolt, was added to
the time
machine so now accurate time information is available for Washington
customers. (It's a lot of work setting up a new POP)
- Sept 23, 1996 The new washington lines were down for purposes
of error testing. We'd noticed errors on the Owls Head end, which could
have impacted performance. Things were corrected and put back into service
Tuesday morning.
- Sept 21, 1996 The Places to go webpage
underwent a re-design. Comments to webmaster@midcoast.com.
- Sept 20, 1996 Some of the new Washington lines were not
working due to switch misconfiguration at Northland Telephone. They plan
to fix it this afternoon (Friday).
- Sept 19, 1996
Washington is working!
The new number
is 845-2080. A notice and instructions are being snail-mailed to all
Washington customers today regarding how to change their software to use
the new number.
- Sept 18, 1996 Internet Service was out for close to an hour
tonight due to some problems beyond out control, where we are connected in
Portland. This was from about 5:45pm to 6:30pm.
- Sept 18, 1996 The router for washington was replaced and
things should be functioning there within 24 hours (really!)
- Sept 18, 1996 Looks like we had a short period of busies at
about 5pm. We have 6 more lines due for installation Thursday (tomorrow).
The steady bad weather has increased usage much more than we'd
anticipated.
- Sept 17, 1996 Logs were restarted for the new billing period
for customers of the Owls Head office. Bills were mailed on the 18th.
- Sept 11, 1996 Help information was added to the help topics
regarding use of Internet Explorer 2 and Internet Explorer 2 for newsgroups.
- Sept 10, 1996 Washington Customers: Nynex is working with
Northland to get the
56k working. It was supposed to be working, but apparently was not fully
tested. We've got a ticket open on this and as soon as this is working,
the new Washington lines will be working.
- Sept 9, 1996 A newsletter was sent out to midcoast.com
customers. If you lost yours or didnt see it, it can be found here.
- Sept 4, 1996 People who use news.midcoast.com for the
address of their news (nntp) server got automatically switched to a new
news server today. If you dont use news.midcoast.com for a news server we
suggest giving it a try. Agate Internet used to provide our news services
and we have our own now, coming in by satellite, and stored on our own
server for speed and convenience. The old server is called
news2.midcoast.com. Send comments to jp@midcoast.com.
- Sept 3, 1996 form2mail.cgi is now a standard feature
on the www.midcoast.com webserver. Visit the help page for information on
how to use it. This lets people put forms on their webpage more easily.
- Sept 2, 1996 A an extended power failure, where we connect
to the internet in Portland, outlasted the battery backups there. We were
off the net for about 45 minutes during the afternoon until power was
restored.
- Sept 1, 1996 Who is the modems page was fixed to reflect
the new modem server as well as modem servers in Wiscasset and Damariscotta.
On a seperate note, information about who is on the modems is not
and has not been available
to people outside of the Midcoast Internet Solutions network.
- Sept 1, 1996 More stuff was added to the Places To Go webpage.
Mostly weather information and a Dr. Seuss link.
- Sept 1, 1996 A different modem server was added to the end of
the chain in Owls Head, replacing Whoopie-pie's current task. It supports
higher (115,200) DTE speeds as well as PAP autologin autodetection (nicer
for '95 users). A direct phone number for this modem server is 594-4912
for those people that can call it locally. Within a month, all of
our modem servers for all of our phone exchanges will support PAP autologin
autodetection.
