THE SESRIEM/NAMIB DESERT

AND THE MAJESTIC SOSSUSLVLEI SAND DUNES

Our formation of three Cessna 210's fly 150 miles Southwest from Windhoek and after a heat-induced bumpy ride we land at at an airstrip in Sesriem which is on the east edge of Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia.
Our taste of 100 degree plus weather begins as we move from aircraft to van..... ...which takes us to the Movenpick Sossuslvei Lodge-our home for two nights.
Drinks and meals are served on the terrace. The bar is just to the right and was used extensively to combat the dry heat. Local Oryx enjoy the shade.
Tents joined the solid rooms where bath & dressing rooms were located. Tent flaps raised at night with a fan running to help sleeping. Vans take the group on an archeological outing.
Very often on sea voyages one of the things done at sunset is to watch for the "Green Flash" ( an optical phenomenon). Art sees a viewing point.... ....and scampers to the top.......
...while the others remained. But many saw the "Green Flash". A van ride brings us to a point where we can hike over the dunes to a dry lake, affectionally called Deadvlei (pronounced ..fly).
On the way we admire the gracefulness of these beautiful sand dunes. And finally top the hill overlooking Deadvlei.
Bonnie takes it all in stride..... ...and finally we make it as Eleanor shows.

Our visit to Sesriem/Sossusvlei is now complete and we leave by flying west to the Nambibia Coast. On the way out we pass over sand dunes like this. This may be Dune 45 where we stopped for a break.
...Next stop is Swakopmund on Namibia's Atlantic Coast.
