SWAKOPMUND

ON NAMIBIA'S SKELETON COAST

What made this segment of the trip so exciting was the beautiful terrain over which we passed. All at low altitude and often spotting animals.
On the way east from the Sossusvlei area toward the coast we pass abandoned diamond mines several shipwrecks marking the beginning of the Skeleton Coast.
Adding to the color were several salt flats as we traveled north toward Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
Christiane happily disembarking at the Swakopmund Airport......
...where we were introduced to the "airplane cat". This friendly gal/guy stows away for a nap on unattended airplanes and ends up at another airport but is always brought back to Swakopmund. We check in at the Swakopmund Hotel and look the town over.
The next day we climb into our three Cessnas and head north to Opuwo in Northwestern Namibia where we visit an Ovahimba settlement. On the way we pass over breath taking landscapes as the following photos show.
We arrive Opuwo airport and head for the Himba settlement. A Himba family talks to us about their lifestyle with emphasis on number of children.
Bonnie has some admirers. Nancy admires the red paste a Himba girl put on her arm while Eleanor's waist pack is the center of attention.
Our visit to the Lands of Southern Africa ends just south of Swakopmund at Walvis Bay. Some travelers flew to Johannesburg for their flight home and other places while five of us, thirsty for more adventure departed on South African Airways for the Cape Town Extension.
Upon our return to Swakopmund we pass over the Tugboat Inn where we enjoyed among other things, King Klip fish
We arrive at Cape Town, the emerald of South Africa. So tag along for more adventure.
