Hurdy-Gurdy Sound Samples |
What the heck does this thing sound like?
In order to give folks an idea of the sound of the hurdy-gurdy, both as a solo and ensemble instrument, I've included the following downloadable files. Almost all of them are MP3 files. A note: while MP3 files can presumably represent near-cd quality, my little home 4-track definitely cannot. These aren't professional recordings!
I've been getting requests for transcriptions of these tunes, which is a great compliment! I've added some PDF files of the sheet music, which are viewable using Adobe's Acrobat Reader, or other viewer. I hope to post ABC versions soon, as well.
Although this music is obviously free for downloading, it is copywritten. If you would like to post links to these tunes, or download them for a free-of-charge public use, please just ask permission first. If you would like to use them in any fee-based context, please contact me and we can work something out.
This short sample is 18 seconds long. It is a simple melody fragment I recorded directly into my computer. It begins with drones and melody strings, then the trompette is added.

I composed this waltz, Valsée Chloe. I play it on the hurdy-gurdy, guitar, and the chord buttons of a honky sounding accordion (how the heck does this thing work?!?). Three cheers for the home 4-track machine!

Another scottische, called The Dining Table; I wrote it for Nina Bohlen. As you'll hear near the end, I didn't have very good separation between the microphone and my stomping foot! This tune has been requested by quite a few folks, thanks to R.T. Taylor who has been playing it everywhere, so I'm posting it here.
