Abandoned!
I woke up early one morning, when I heard a lot of talking and movement by my family. They were putting many things in the car. I became frightened and hid under the sofa. I wondered if they were going to force me into that terrible machine! Then things quieted down and everyone ate breakfast. I went slowly into the kitchen looking for some leftover egg yolk, when I saw Sally crying. I gave her a leg rub, but that made her cry even more. She picked me up and gave me a long hug and cried louder. What is going on? The man of the house took me from Sally and put me outdoors.
I soon saw some chickadees, started stalking, and forgot all about the things that happened earlier. Later, the whole famly left in the car. I felt good that I didn't have to go. The rest of the day was wonderful. I caught a mouse for lunch, stalked lots of birds and explored around the brook in the field. Did a lot of sleeping too. It was almost dark, when I woke from a nap, so I hurried back to the house. It was dark, so I went under the house and slept in a pile of last year's leaves.
In the morning I went to the kitchen door. No one there. Must be sleeping late. After spending some time hunting, I went back and looked in. Still no one! Then I noticed that the car was not in the driveway. Maybe they are staying away for a while. I spent the day, much like yesterday, and went home before dark. Still no family. Where is Sally? It began to rain, so I settled down in my leaf pile.
It was still raining the next morning, so I stayed under the house. After a while I became very hungry and thirsty. A quick trip to the kitchen door. They are still not home. Back under the house. Next day the rain stopped and I went hunting for food. This continued for many days. Then I decided that something bad had happened to my family, and since the hunting was not very good, I decided to travel to a better area.
