TOWN of WASHINGTON, MAINE MINING ORDINANCE
ARTICLE I - TITLE & PURPOSE
This Ordinance shall be known and may be cited as the Town of Washington, Surface and Subsurface Mineral Extraction Ordinance, or by it's short title of Town of Washington Mining Ordinance and will be referred to herein as "this Ordinance."
The purpose of this Ordinance is to put into law minimum removal and reclamation standards, and municipal procedures intended to regulate the removal, processing and storage of topsoil, loam, rock, flat rock, sand, gravel, or other similar materials. These standards and procedures are intended to protect the public health, safety, and general welfare, and to minimize the adverse impact of extraction to the Town, abutting property owners, citizens of the Town, and wildlife and natural resources by:
- Preserving and protecting surface and groundwater quality and quantity for current and future use of the town and/or its residents.
- Preserving the value of property and its future ability to be an asset to the town and its residents.
- Limiting the volume and size of the most intensive types of extraction.
