Prolonging Blooms
Once picked, flowers start to fade at different rates.  Cut flowers will benefit from several treatments.

  • Avoid placing arrangements in direct sunlight and out of a drying wind.
  • Change the water every couple of days replacing with warm water. Always wash the vase between water changes to prevent mold and bacteria from growing and killing your arrangement.  Keep the vase filled to force water and nutrients up the stems.

  • Cut stems back 1/4"-1/2" inch on an angle when you receive flowers or when changing the water.  Remove all foliage below the water level.

  • Use clean, sharp shears and make the cut under water to avoid air getting into the stems. Air bubbles will block water and nutrient uptake.

  • Use a bloom extending solution when changing water.

The purpose of the extending solution is to lower the pH level, provide carbohydrates and kill bacteria in the water.

    Here's an alternate recipe:
To make a gallon of vase water: Start with 3 qts. warm water.  Add 1 qt. clear, carbonated lemon/lime soda (don't use diet), 2 tbls white vinegar or clear mouthwash and an old penny - pre 1950. Mix together and fill the vase as full as possible.

  • On a daily basis, remove flowers & stems as they wilt or go by.

  • Refrigerate arrangements at night but protect them from gasses emitted by food in the refrigerator. A trash bag loose over the top and wrapped around the vase should help. Ethylene gas emitted by fruit and vegetables will kill an arrangement quickly.
