Welcome to Appleton Authors' Day!

We encourage parents with young children to take advantage of our child care.

Participants and reading times are subject to change.

You will find an updated schedule of author readings on the board by the entrance.

Raffle tickets for the Maine Authors' Quilt can be purchased for $1 each, or six for $5.

Debby Atwell S R(10:30) Q Rockland. Children/4-12 years. Atwell writes in a folk tale style with a contemporary message. Her latest book is The Thanksgiving Door. She lives in Rockland with her family. Robert F. Bailey S R(1:30) Q Appleton. Carpentry/Adult. The Pocket Size Carpenter's Helper has been in print for 18 years and has sold 80,000 copies.
Robert F. Baldwin S R(11:00 & 12:30) Newcastle. Children/4-10 years. He has been a writer, actor, storyteller and folksinger for more than 40 years and lives in Newcastle with his wife. Kate Barnes R(1:30) Q Appleton. Poetry/Adult. My poetry is a reflection of the life we all share in rural Maine. I had the good fortune to be appointed Maine's first Poet Laureate.

Joanna Campbell a.k.a. Jo Ann Simon S Q Camden. 8-15 years. "As Joanna Campbell I write horse books. My most popular series is the 'Thoroughbred Series.' Roger F. Duncan Q R(12:30) East Boothbay. Non-fiction/Adult. "I am currently doing articles for Working Waterfront and working on an historical novel." Richard Foerster S R(2:00) Q York Beach. Poetry/Adult. He has won many awards for his poetry. Since 1986 he has lived in York Beach where he currently edits Chautauqua Literary Journal.

She has completed a novel with Ralph Bieber titled The Epicure and is currently working on several new writing projects. She lives with the author Rick Hautala.

Rhea Côté Robbins S R(12:00) Q Brewer. 8th grade to adult. She is "97 winner of the Maine Chapbook Award for her work of creative nonfiction entitled Wednesday's Child. Neil Rolde S R(3:00) Q York Village. Local history/Adult. "I write history in non-academic manner for the general public."
Steve Rzasa Q Appleton. Science Fiction/Young teen to Adult. This Stirring Strife is the author's first work of science fiction. The novel presents Christian themes and characters in a classic space adventure. Martin Steingesser S R(11:00) Q Portland. Poetry/young teen to adult. His poems have been published in a broad spectrum, including the Op-Ed Page of the New York Times and The American Poetry Review.
Linda Tatelbaum S R(2:30) Q Appleton. Non-fiction & fiction/Late high school through adult. She's been writing all her life. She teaches English at Colby College, and is a regular commentator on public radio. Cynthia Thayer S R(2:30) Q Gouldsboro. Fiction/Adult. Strong for Potatoes depicts the coming-of-age of a Passamoquoddy woman. A Certain Slant of Light is a moving tale of loss, faith, music and the healing power of friendship. She lives with her family on Darthia Farm in Gouldsboro.

I live with my husband in Hope and I work as a nurse." Tay Vaughan R(2:00) Q Appleton. Business/Adult. He will offer a progress report about the impact of the digital information revolution on traditional ways of life and the human condition.
Lea Wait S R(1:00) Q Edgecomb. Historical fiction/7 and up and adult suspense. "My first adult mystery was nominated for an Agatha for 'best first mystery' this year. I also write an historical series for children set in 19th century Wiscasset, Maine." Monica Wood R(12:00) Q Portland. Adult novels and short-stories as well as The Pocket Muse: Ideas and Inspirations for Writing.
Student Authors & Readers
Britanny Harrison-Billiat (12:00) I like writing stories and poems, especially fantasy. I have lots of animals and am an equestrian. I like horses, snakes, birds, cats and fish. I like reading and watching movies about genetics. Grade 7

Sam Kennedy (12:00) Some of my favorite books are Buffy The Vampire Slayer books, Harry Potter books, Mary-Kate and Ashley books, Pony Pals Club books and Animals Ark books. I am 12 years old, almost 13, and I love animals and spending time with them. I often write about animals and family and friends. Grade 7

Amanda Denman (12:00) I get A-Cs in school, I am in student leaders and am a music honor student. I am in chorus, band and regular music class. Right now we are working on keyboarding. I love writing poetry and one day I want to become a poet, like a famous one. My second choice would be to become a politician. Grade 7

Amanda Ripley (12:00) I like to write fiction stories. l also like to draw and do anything else to do with art. I like to learn cool stuff about cars, too! Grade 8

Samantha Hilt (11:00) Hi, my name is Samantha Hilt but people call me Sam. I live in Appleton. I have a sister named Bekah and a brother named Owen. I have a dog a cat and two chickens. I am nine years old and in fourth grade. I love math and the color purple. I enjoy school and get straight A's. I think writing is really nice, because just one story can change a persons life. Grade 4

Rebekah Hilt (11:00) Hi, my name is Rebekah Hilt, but people call me Bekah. I am seven years old. I have one sister named Sam and one brother named Owen. I live in Appleton .I have a black lab named Starr and a tiger cat with three legs that has been missing. I like reading, watching T.V., playing all sports, eating ice cream and I love to write funny stories! Grade 2

Taylor Light-Surek (11:30) I began writing in first grade and wrote four books in second grade, like a book called The Dragon and the Castle. Sometimes I do not feel like a writer, especially when I have good writing days and bad writing days. I get some of my ideas from movies and memories. Grade 5

Jedediah Patten (11:30) I didn't start out as a writer. Then in second grade, I began to write three-to-four page pieces, including a story called Monsters. After third grade, I read a lot more (Harry Potter!) and that helps my imagination and mind as I write in fifth grade. Grade 5
