LIVE POET CARRIES OLYMPIC FLAME

JUNE 15, 1996 -- EAST SHARON, MASSACHUSETTS -- George Van Deventer of Washington, Maine, founder and Executive Director of Mid-Coast Maine's Live Poets Society carried the Olympic Flame for 1 kilometer (.6 mile) on its way to Atlanta for this summer's Olympic Games. George was picked after being nominated for his community involvement and spirit by a local friend, Phyllis Janto. "It was a thrill of a lifetime," he said afterwards.

A number of Washingtonians cheered him on at the scene of the run. Friends and neighbors Dave and Janet Martucci, wife Arlene, daughter Susan as well as his brother David and family and other friends all wore their distinctive red "Poetry in Motion" commemorative Tee Shirts designed by Ruth Bookey and many of them waved Maine and Washington flags.
