Volume 1, Number 7 Autumn 2001 GUEST COLUMN: TURN
BEAUTY INSIDE OUT The May/June 2001 issue of award-wining New Moon Magazine featured "25 Beautiful Girls". These girls (ages 8-14) were nominated by friends and family because of their Inner Beauty. (See Clare Fortune-Agan's brother John's essay to nominate his sister who was chosen as a Beautiful Girl.) A May 11th meeting was held in New York City between 31 of the 2001 Beautiful Girls, the New Moon Girls Editorial Board and ad executives to discuss images of girls in advertising. That dialogue resulted in the development of "Best Practices" for images of and messages about girls in advertising that will now be disseminated to the industry. (Look for details on their website, www.newmoon.org.) Girls also met with Jean Kilbourne, learned how images of models and celebrities are "computer-enhanced" to look perfect (after watching an actual photo shoot) and had lunch with ad industry professionals. Now is the time to nominate Beautiful Girls for Now Moon's May/June 2002 issue. Please find the guidelines on their web site: www.newmoon.org The deadline is November 1, 2001.
