MVLT Plans
to Create New Trails
Medomak Valley
Land Trust’s stewardship committee has set some ambitious goals for
the spring, including creating new trails to Mill Pond and the top
of Clarry Hill, as well as a network of trails at the Burkett Mill
Preserve that will be available for hiking in the summer and skiing
in the winter.
The Medomak Valley
Land Trust owns eight preserves that are all open to the public for
low-impact recreation. The new signs and walking trails are designed
to make these places more accessible, while at the same time
protecting their ecological value by limiting foot traffic to a
designated trail that avoids any sensitive habitats. The Mill Pond
and Clarry Hill trails are scheduled to be completed this spring,
and the Burkett Mill Trail network will have its official opening in
July. MVLT also maintains an existing trail on their Goose River
Peace Corps preserve, and has been working with community partners
including the Waldoboro Sno-Crawlers and Midcoast Audubon to
maintain and promote trails throughout the watershed.
Snowy weather this
winter delayed the start of new trail projects, but now that spring
has finally arrived we are ready to jump into action and begin work.
Our first work party will take place at the Burkett Mill preserve on
Monday April 7th at 9am, and we will be creating the new
Mill Pond trail on Sunday April 13th at 1pm. Trail work
is fun and very satisfying, and we would welcome any volunteers who
are interested in helping out with these or any other spring trail
work days. No experience is necessary, and the work is appropriate
for all ages and ability levels. Please contact Katie at 832-5570 or
volmvlt@midcoast.com for more information about our trail
projects or to sign up for a work day.
