Comments:
Between 1988-’92 the original Philip Rhodes sloop SHANTIH, built in 1946 by Hubert Johnson was dismantled piece by piece and a new SHANTIH II evolved in the process.
All new frames, floors, c/b trunk, stem, horn-timber & transom became a new structure to which the original ballast keel & deadwood were bolted. The original planking served as rib-bands during the framing process and was mostly discarded as new planks were installed. The bottom 4 strakes are white oak for structural purposes and the rest is 1-1/8” mahogany. The sheer plank was left off while new sheer clamp (2” Douglas Fir) and beam shelf was steamed into place.
A new deck frame came next, then the sheer plank followed. Teak covering boards, grubs and king planks were installed. Then came the 1-3/8 “ x 1- 7/8” clear , quarter-sawn White Pine (no sap- heartwood only) sprung deck. The cabin trunk is solid mahogany with ash beams, cedar & Dynel top, with teak trim. Cockpit and coaming is also all new.
New boom & clubfoot made, with extensive rebuild done to the mast. New standing rigging, turnbuckles, fully battened mainsail w/dutchman furling, much new hardware. All new raised panel interior.
In short, the boat is new; my wife & I are the old ones now !! And for 15 years we have put our hearts and souls into this fantastic vessel, the last 11 years spent sailing the Penobscot Bay. We have enjoyed every moment, so much so that we have built a bigger, new 52’ Alden Schooner HERON. SHANTIH II is on the market for sale. It is a great boat in top condition that has a reasonable track record at the Eggemoggen Reach Regatta. This boat is definitely worth looking at if you are looking for a classic boat that looks great & performs well.
