PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

Your Excellency:

I am writing to express grave concern about the imprisonment of Abidjan Obulkasim and Reshat Mehmet. They were students in Kashgar when they were arrested in early 1995 for having discussed political and human rights issues during a birthday picnic the year before. At their trial in 1995 they were accused of having formed a "counter-revolutionary group" and of planning to engage in "separatist" activities.

Has the reported death of Abidjan Obulkasim been investigated?

Is Tursunjan Mehmet still in prison? If so, I am worried about his condition and fear that he may be subjected to ill-treatment. I urge you to see that prisoners are treated in accordance with the United Nations Minimum Standards for the Treatment of Prisoners.

Please authorize the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience, imprisoned solely for the peaceful exercise of their rights
to freedom of opinion and association.

Sincerely yours,
